Are you getting a good night’s sleep? Most of us struggle to get in the 7-9 hours of good sleep we need every night. Why is this important you ask? If you are not getting enough sleep your body is not able to recover day to day and your performance will suffer. But not getting enough sleep causes all sort of other problems as well. Most sleep studies have shown three major problems with not getting enough sleep – alteration in glucose metabolism, increased appetite, and decreased energy expenditure. Check out this article The Importance of a Good Night Sleep to fully understand the problems these three things cause in the body. The article gets a little technical, but if you can sort through it there is a lot of good information.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to insulin resistance, weight gain and all of the problems associated with that, like Type 2 Diabetes. Not to mention the other hormones that get unbalanced once your insulin levels are off.

If you feel sluggish or you are not recovering from your workouts very well think about how you are sleeping. There are a lot of factors that can effect performance, and sleep is a big one, so make sure you are getting enough!
