I recently watched an interview with Joe De Sena, the founder of the Spartan Race and thought he made some pretty interesting points. If you aren’t familiar with the Spartan Race or the Spartan Death Race, these are challenges set up to try to break people. The goal of these races is to make people fail and put people in seemingly impossible situations. De Sena’s theory is that once you have experienced a challenge like this, you will be changed forever. He cites research that shows your brain physically changes after a near-death experience, and your outlook on life changes as well.

Now, we aren’t trying to create near-death experiences in the gym every day, but we are trying to challenge you and push you to your limits. We believe that once you have pushed as hard as you can go you change both mentally and physically. If you never test yourself, how can you know what you are capable of? So while it is fun to come in and get a good workout, try not to take a casual approach. I’ve seen first-hand how accomplishing something in the gym that once seemed impossible makes a person immediately more confident in every other part of his or her life. If you want to experience true change, test yourself. Push yourself harder than you did the day before. Try something new. Get uncomfortable and see how you come out on the other side. I think you will like what you find.

Of course, none of these things come easy. De Sena makes that point over and over. True change and accomplishment comes from hard work. There is no shortcut and no magic pill. You put in the work and you get results. Period.
