This Memorial Day - Monday, May 27 - we will do Murph. Murph is a CrossFit Hero WOD and is done in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, age 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28th 2005. This year we will have a little extra incentive. A friend of mine is running the River Bank Run 25k this Saturday to raise money for LZ Michigan's endowment fund. This is a fund set up to provide an education for Vietnam veterans and their families at Grand Valley. The endowment is currently underfunded and needs to reach a specific goal by the end of June to continue. My friend Alison has raised nearly $10,000 as she trained for the 25k and I want to help her and LZ Michigan reach their goal. I don't have all of the details yet, but I will pass them along to you soon. What I want you to do is start telling people about this workout and why you are doing it. If each of us can get pledges from people and maybe throw in a little ourselves I believe we can make a sizable contribution to the endowment. For now, we're going to ask for a $10 donation to do Murph with us on Memorial Day. This is a donation and 100% will go to LZ Michigan. If you can't afford it, that's ok, come do the workout and honor the fallen heroes.

January 2010 my husband came home from working at Fifth Third Ballpark and told me about an event they were going to put on in conjunction with WGVU Public Media. It was going to be a “Welcome Home” for Vietnam Veterans. He didn’t have a lot of info but I was intrigued since my Dad is a Vietnam Vet so I decided to be a volunteer. Along with other members of the community, I spent 6 months helping to coordinate what was going to be a one day event to give Vietnam Veterans the proper welcome home they were denied so many years ago.
The LZ Michigan event took place on July 3, 2010. The event itself consisted of music, food, military vehicles, the traveling wall, the Vietnam Big Map and a lot of other things but the day became about so much more than that. There is not an easy, quick way to put into words what took place that day but lives were changed, including my own. Our Vietnam Veterans have been dealing with a lot over the past years but those who attended the event were able to really open up and achieve some sort of closure that day. It was quickly decided this could not be a one and done event. Maybe it didn’t mean doing another LZ Michigan right away but somehow we needed to keep this alive.
When the event was first planned it was decided that any profit would be put in an endowment fund that would provide a scholarship to a Veteran or their dependent for Grand Valley. Being the dependant of a Veteran whose family worked very hard to help me attend college, this really hit home. The event itself did not raise enough funds for the endowment so over the past few years we’ve been trying to come up with ways to get this funded. It became a main focus of the WGVU Engage Committee for 2013.
What I’m doing:
I am running the 25K Riverbank Run in hopes of raising $10,000 for the endowment fund. This is not a small amount of money to raise. I knew if I wanted people to donate I was going to need to do something big and something that seemed pretty much impossible at the time. When I started training I could barely make it to the end of the block and was not exactly in shape or at a healthy weight. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but if all I had to do was figure out how to run to be able to give this gift to a Veteran, then I was going to figure out how to run. And I did. I have been training non stop since January. I’ve passed up nights out with friends, and a lot of yummy looking food. I’ve committed to waking up VERY early on Saturday mornings and spending those chilly winter evenings outside running. I’m not there yet, but by May 11th I will be and it will absolutely be worth it.
I hope this is something we can really get behind. It's a great cause and helps local veterans and their families. These people deserve our support and need it more than ever as their funding continues to get cut. Any donations can be brought to us at the gym.
