CrossFit athlete and medical student Julie Foucher wrote a great article on her website about the inherent risks in everything we do. The article is somewhat in response to the negative attention we see about CrossFit, and it makes the case that the benefits far outweigh the risks. Julie points out that everything we do has risk including her future place of employment in the medical field.
Ironically, the hospital – the place to which we go for life-saving interventions – is also one of the most dangerous places to spend time as a patient.
She also says that the health benefits we receive from doing functional movements at high intensity (aka CrossFit) make up for the soreness and minor injuries we may deal with along the way. Of course, there is always risk and the harder you train the greater the risk, but for the recreational CrossFitter the things we do on a daily basis are no more dangerous than any other sport or fitness regime. Give the article a read and see what you think. I think she makes quite a compelling case.
