Remember that our 14-Day Sugar Free Challenge starts today! This is a great way to get your diet on track if you have been a little lax lately. It's also a great way to keep you on track during tough times like weekends or holidays. There are no rules to this challenge, and there are now winners. It's just a way for us to take stock of what we are eating every day and realize how much sugar is in the foods we eat. The food industry sneaks sugar into almost everything and if you aren't reading labels and ingredients then you have no idea how much sugar you are consuming. This is supposed to be fun and rewarding for everyone, and it should make it easier with a support group. I know I am ready for a detox after my vacation and I'm looking forward to skipping the cheat meals and drinks for a couple of weeks. We watched the movie Fed Up a few weeks ago and it opened a lot of our eyes to how much sugar we are taking in. The creators of that movie have a sugar-free challenge of their own and it can give you some good guidelines of what to do. Remember, it's up to you to decide if something is worth eating. All carbohydrates turn into sugar in your body so don't just load up on fruit juice because it's "natural." Here's the description of Fed Up's challenge:
Start by cutting sodas and other sweetened beverages and foods that have ADDED sugars. EAT real, fresh, whole foods and lay off all products that contain added sugar including honey, molasses, agave, etc., and all liquid sugars, such as sodas, bottled teas, fruit juices, and sports drinks. This includes all artificial sugars and sugar substitutes.
No exceptions, so don’t ask! Artificial sweeteners slow your metabolism and make you crave and eat more food. Also, be aware of foods that may have hidden sugars, like yogurts, canned foods, spaghetti sauce, and ketchup. Watch for hidden names of sugar. Also try cutting out all flour products that turn to sugar in your body.
It sounds tough because it is tough, but we will pull each other through and then end up feeling so much better. Here’s to a happy and healthy school year!
