Most of you know I was out of town over the weekend for the wedding of one of my best friends from college. It was so great to get back to North Carolina and see so many people that I haven't seen in years. I've lived in Michigan for a little more than 10 years and I don't get to make it back to North Carolina as often as I'd like, so it was pretty exciting to reunite with a lot of old friends. With that being said, I realized that my answer to the question "How do you like Michigan?" has changed over the years. I came to Michigan not thinking I would stay more than two or three years, but circumstances dictated otherwise. After five years I was really itching to move back to my old home. I tried without success to find a new career 800 miles away. While I was trying desperately to get back to NC, I made a trip home for Christmas and New Year's Eve and met a guy that told me about CrossFit.
At the time I was wondering who this guy at a New Year's Eve party was that only wanted to talk about CrossFit. He cornered me for about an hour and sung the praises of this training program and essentially forced me to go home and look into it. So that's what I did. I came back to Michigan, found crossfit.com and CrossFit Grand Rapids and went to work. Then I became that guy cornering people and talking about CrossFit.
I eventually had the opportunity to open my own CrossFit affiliate and realized that meant I'd be staying in Michigan for a long time. I was nervous, but knew it was the right choice. I have met some of the best people I have ever known thanks to CrossFit and CrossFit 616. I know a lot of CrossFit gyms brag about their amazing community of people, but I really can't imagine finding a group like this anywhere else.
Now, when I come home from vacation, there is no dread. I actually look forward to getting back to the people I love here. I look forward to coming to work and seeing you all every day. I can't thank the people here enough for making Grand Rapids my new home.
I got asked a lot "how I like Michigan" this past weekend, and my answer now is that I love it because I am surrounded by great people. Of course, I still say I hate the winters, but they are much more tolerable now!
