SCHEDULE CHANGE: On Saturday, July 4 the class will be at 8:30 am rather than 9:30 am. We want you to be able to get your workout in and have the full holiday to spend with your friends and family. Female athletes have it hard. You put in so much work to improve your performance and so often your hard work is overlooked by people that would rather comment on your looks. In this blog post called Mass-Hysteria, the author discusses how damaging this attitude can be.
I find the first reaction from most people when shown an impressive feat from a female athlete that may be developed perfectly for their sport, is to comment on her appearance, to note the attractiveness first and ability second.
I think we can all do a better job of appreciating performance over appearance. The top women CrossFit athletes look the way they do because that is what is required to be a high-level athlete in the sport. Just like great runners look like great runners and great soccer players look like great soccer players. Does that mean you have to look like them? Of course not. As the author says, people thinking they will look like the top athletes of the sport is not fair "as if it is an easy look to attain, or comes about by happenstance." You should be able to look however you want without worrying about how others will judge you. So next time you watch an amazing CrossFit or weightlifting performance, let's try not to have our first comment or thought be about the woman's looks. Let's appreciate these great athletes for what they do and leave it at that.
