My parents always told me not to hang around with the bad kids. Said they'd be a bad influence on me. And no matter how much I argued that I would be a good influence on them, it didn't matter in my parents eyes. They clearly knew something I didn't at the time. Now, everyone cites motivational speaker Jim Rohn's quote "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."
Our very own Christian Roberts likes to say, "If you're the best in the room, you need to find a new room." I'm sure he stole this from someone much smarter.
Anyway, the point is that we need to surround ourselves with people that make us better. It's something everyone has known from the beginning of time, but it needs to be said out loud occasionally.
I think this is what makes CrossFit and the affiliate system work so well. We get to surround ourselves with people looking to improve their lives through health and fitness. We are constantly challenged by those around us to push to a new level.
We see people that are stronger and faster and rather than being embarrassed about our weak points, we are encouraged by those same people to improve.
If you're looking to make a change in your life, whether it's nutrition, fitness, or your daily outlook, take a look at the people around you. Do those people represent the things you want to be a part of?
Like my parents said, don't hang around with the bad kids. Find people that lift you up and help you reach your goals.
