The holiday season is officially upon us and for some of us that are attempting to stick to a healthy diet, these next few weeks can be daunting.

First, remember that indulging from time to time is not the end of the world (it’s probably even good for you, at least mentally). Even if you eat more than you wanted to at one meal or for one day, you can get right back on track. It doesn’t mean you should throw it all out and wait ‘til January 1 to have a vegetable again.

For me, the hardest part is that you are surrounded by friends and family that want to celebrate the holidays for more than just one day. Most of the time I spend with my family revolves around the next meal. Breakfast starts to look like dessert and dinner looks like three of my normal meals combined.

The first way I combat this is by eating well as much as possible throughout the year leading up to this point. We know it’s coming, so being a little stricter in the months leading up to now helps offset some of this indulgence.

Also, and I really struggle with this, I have to speak up and not be ashamed that I want eggs for breakfast instead of donuts or cake.

The other thing I try to do is eat slower at these big feasts so I can pay attention to my body and know when I am full. The faster I eat, the more I stuff down before my brain even realizes I’ve overdone it.

Don’t let family or friends pressure you into making poor food choices. Think about what you want to do before you get to the party. If you have a plan, any plan, you are more likely to stick to it or at least stay close to it. Tell people your plan so you can have some accountability too. But be careful it’s not taken as shaming other people for their food choices, even if they can make fun of you for eating a salad.

The next six weeks can be a challenge, but if you set your mind to it now, it will be easier to stick to your plan. If you have questions or concerns, please talk to a coach.
